Manchester Driving Test Routes — All Test Centres
How Test Routes Work
The DVSA no longer publishes fixed test routes. Instead, examiners choose from a pool of routes for each centre, varying them to prevent rote learning. However, the road network around each centre is finite — there are only so many possible routes. DriveSQ instructors have mapped the most common routes from extensive experience and learner feedback. We practise these routes until every junction, roundabout, and lane change feels familiar.
Cheetham Hill Routes
Routes typically head along the A665 towards Prestwich, through Broughton residential streets, along Queens Road, and around the Strangeways area. Key challenges: the A665/Queens Road multi-lane roundabout, the A56 merge, and tight residential streets with parked cars in Lower Broughton. Speed zones change frequently between 20 and 30mph.
West Didsbury Routes
Routes usually cover Palatine Road, Wilmslow Road towards Fallowfield, Barlow Moor Road towards Chorlton, and residential streets around Burton Road. Key challenges: Palatine Road/Barlow Moor Road junction, Princess Parkway approaches, Metrolink crossings, and 20mph school zones. The suburban setting is generally less stressful than inner-city centres.
Sale Routes
Typical routes use the A56 Washway Road, Marsland Road, Cross Street, and Brooklands residential areas. Key challenges: the A56 lane changes, Sale one-way system, speed humps in Brooklands, and the Marsland Road/Washway Road junction. Some routes approach M60 junction roundabouts.
Stockport Routes
Routes cover Dialstone Lane, the A6 Wellington Road, Buxton Road, and Great Moor residential streets. Key challenges: steep hills (especially Dialstone Lane), the A6 dual carriageway speed, the town centre gyratory, and narrow streets around Davenport with parked cars on both sides.
Hyde Routes
Routes use the A57 Manchester Road, Mottram Road, Stockport Road, and Gee Cross residential areas. Key challenges: the M67 junction roundabout, national speed limit sections towards Mottram, steep hills in Gee Cross, and frequent speed limit changes between 30, 40, and NSL.
Bredbury Routes
Routes typically cover George Lane, Stockport Road, the A560, and residential areas around Romiley and Woodley. Key challenges: the A560 Bredbury roundabout, residential hills in Romiley, narrow bridges near Marple, and M60 approach roundabouts.
Our Test Route Preparation
DriveSQ does not just show you test routes — we teach you to read any road confidently. Our route practice focuses on the skills each route tests: lane discipline, speed management, junction observation, and independent navigation. This means even if the examiner takes an unfamiliar variation, you handle it with confidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are driving test routes published?
No. The DVSA stopped publishing fixed routes. However, experienced instructors know the road network around each centre and can identify the most common route patterns.
Which test centre has the easiest routes?
Bredbury and West Didsbury generally have higher pass rates and more suburban routes. However, the best centre for you depends on your skills and where you have practised.
Can I choose my test centre?
Yes. You book your test at whichever centre you prefer. Your DriveSQ instructor will advise which centre suits your driving style and location.

The Heatons (Heaton Moor, Heaton Chapel & Heaton Norris) Local Area Guide
Lessons around the Heatons use real local roads including Didsbury Road, Heaton Moor Road and Wellington Road North, so by the time you're ready for your test you've already driven the streets you'll use every day after passing. Heaton Moor Park has been a community fixture since 1894, and the area around it is well known locally for its independent cafes and the restored Savoy cinema.
We also plan around school-run traffic near Priestnall School and St Thomas's Junior School, using quieter spots like Heaton Norris Park for early manoeuvre practice before stepping up to busier sections of Didsbury Road.
Test centre: most learners around the Heatons test at Sale Driving Test Centre; mock tests are planned around the routes examiners actually use from there.
“Practising near Heaton Norris Park before tackling Didsbury Road made the whole thing feel manageable rather than overwhelming.” – Liam, The Heatons (Heaton Moor, Heaton Chapel & Heaton Norris)
