What Age Can I Start Driving in the UK?
Key Ages for Learner Drivers
- 15 years 9 months — you can apply for a provisional driving licence
- 17 years — you can start driving lessons on public roads and take the theory test
- 16 years — you can start riding a moped or driving a car if you receive the enhanced rate of the mobility component of PIP (Personal Independence Payment)
Getting Your Provisional Licence
Apply online at GOV.UK. You need your National Insurance number, a valid UK passport or identity document, addresses where you have lived for the last 3 years, and £34 (online) or £43 (post). Apply at 15 years 9 months so your licence arrives before your 17th birthday. The photocard licence is valid for 10 years.
Before You Turn 17
While you cannot drive on public roads until 17, you can prepare by studying for the theory test (no minimum age to take it once you have a provisional licence at 17), learning about road signs and the Highway Code, practising observation as a passenger, and building confidence through Go Kart or off-road driving experiences.
Taking Your Tests
Theory test: you can take this from age 17. Book online at GOV.UK (£23). Your pass is valid for 2 years. Practical test: you can take this from age 17, as long as you have passed the theory test. Book online (£62 weekday, £75 weekends/evenings). There is no maximum age for taking a driving test.
