What Happens If You Fail Your Driving Test
Immediately After Failing
The examiner will tell you that you have not passed and explain the key reasons. You will receive a driving test report showing all faults — minor, serious, and dangerous. Your DriveSQ instructor will be waiting outside and will review the report with you in detail. It is completely normal to feel disappointed, but remember: most successful drivers did not pass first time.
Understanding Your Fault Report
- Minor faults (driving faults) — mistakes that were not dangerous in the specific circumstances. You can have up to 15 and still pass
- Serious faults — potentially dangerous mistakes. One serious fault means you fail
- Dangerous faults — mistakes where actual danger was caused to another road user. One dangerous fault means you fail
- The report shows exactly which categories the faults fell into, helping you target specific weaknesses
Rebooking Your Test
You can rebook immediately, but the earliest you can retake is 10 working days after your failed attempt. This gives you time to address the faults. Book online at GOV.UK (£62 weekday, £75 weekends). Check for cancellation slots for earlier availability.
Preparing for Your Retake
- Review every fault on your report with your instructor
- Identify whether faults were one-off errors or habitual patterns
- Schedule 3-5 focused lessons targeting your specific weak areas
- Complete at least 2 mock tests before your retake
- If nerves were a factor, discuss anxiety management strategies with your instructor
- Do not change your test centre unless your instructor recommends it
Statistics to Reassure You
The national first-time pass rate is approximately 47% — meaning more than half of candidates fail first time. Most people pass on their second attempt. DriveSQ retake candidates have a pass rate above 85% because we use the fault report to create a targeted improvement plan. Failing is not a reflection of your ability — it is a normal part of the process for many drivers.

Mossley Local Area Guide
Lessons around Mossley use real local roads including Mill Lane, Stockport Road and Stamford Street, so by the time you're ready for your test you've already driven the streets you'll use every day after passing. Mossley uniquely grew to straddle three historic English counties — Lancashire, Cheshire, and the West Riding of Yorkshire — a legacy still reflected today in the town council's three wards, named 'Cheshire', 'Lancashire', and 'Yorkshire'.
We also plan around school-run traffic near St Joseph's RC Primary School and St George's CE Primary School (Stamford Street), using quieter spots like Brushes Valley/Brushes Reservoir for early manoeuvre practice before stepping up to busier sections of Mill Lane.
Test centre: most learners around Mossley test at Bredbury (Manchester) Driving Test Centre, Lingard Lane, Bredbury, Stockport, SK6 2QT; mock tests are planned around the routes examiners actually use from there.
“Honest feedback every lesson, and routes that actually matched what came up on test day near Bredbury (Manchester) Driving Test Centre, Lingard Lane, Bredbury, Stockport, SK6 2QT.” – Beth, Mossley
