How to Book Your Driving Test — Step by Step
Before You Book
- You must hold a valid UK provisional driving licence
- You must have passed your theory test (your certificate must be valid — it expires after 2 years)
- Your instructor must confirm you are approaching test standard
- Decide which test centre you want — discuss with your DriveSQ instructor
Booking Online
Book at GOV.UK — this is the only official booking site. You need your provisional driving licence number, your theory test pass certificate number, and a debit or credit card. The test costs £62 for weekday tests and £75 for evening and weekend tests. Choose your preferred test centre, select an available date and time, and pay online. You will receive a booking confirmation by email.
Getting an Earlier Date
- Check the booking system daily — cancellations create new slots regularly
- Try different test centres — one may have earlier availability than your first choice
- Avoid booking during peak periods (January-March and September-November when universities restart)
- Some third-party apps alert you to cancellation slots — use cautiously and only official services
- Your DriveSQ instructor may know which centres typically have shorter waiting times
Changing or Cancelling Your Test
You can change your test date or centre online with at least 3 clear working days notice at no charge. Cancel with 3 clear working days notice for a full refund. Less than 3 working days notice and you lose the full fee. If you are not ready, it is better to postpone than to take the test unprepared and fail.
Test Day Requirements
Bring your provisional driving licence (photocard). Arrive at least 10 minutes before your appointment. Your DriveSQ instructor will provide the car. If you arrive late, the test is cancelled and you lose your fee. If your licence is expired, the test cannot proceed.

Romiley Local Area Guide
Lessons around Romiley use real local roads including Green Lane, Hatherlow and Compstall Road, so by the time you're ready for your test you've already driven the streets you'll use every day after passing. The Peak Forest Canal reached Romiley in 1796, transforming the once-rural village by opening it up to housing and small industry.
We also plan around school-run traffic near Harrytown Catholic High School and Werneth School, using quieter spots like Peak Forest Canal for early manoeuvre practice before stepping up to busier sections of Green Lane.
Test centre: most learners around Romiley test at Stockport Driving Test Centre, Lingard Lane, Bredbury, Stockport, Greater Manchester, SK6 2QT; mock tests are planned around the routes examiners actually use from there.
“We used Peak Forest Canal for early manoeuvre practice before moving onto busier roads — built my confidence step by step.” – Ryan, Romiley
