Manchester Driving Test Routes — The Insider Guide
No other driving school in Manchester publishes this level of route detail. DriveSQ instructors have collectively driven thousands of test routes across all six Manchester centres. This page shares the junctions, roundabouts, and road sections that appear most frequently — and the specific mistakes that cause learners to fail at each one.
Cheetham Hill — The Toughest Centre (42-45% pass rate)
Routes you WILL encounter:
- A665 northbound towards Prestwich — multi-lane roundabouts, speed limit changes from 30 to 40, heavy traffic. The Queens Road roundabout is the single most common failure point — learners choose the wrong lane or fail to check mirrors when changing lane.
- Broughton residential loop — tight terraced streets with cars parked on both sides creating single-file passing situations. The examiner watches your priority judgement — who has right of way when two cars meet in a narrow gap.
- Strangeways / A56 approach — the merge from Cheetham Hill Road onto the A56 towards Salford requires confident acceleration and mirror checking. HGVs from Strangeways warehouses create large blind spots.
Failure hotspot: Queens Road / A665 roundabout
This multi-lane roundabout has 5 exits and requires lane selection 200 metres before arrival. Signs are clear but learners panic and either choose the wrong lane or attempt a last-second lane change (serious fault). DriveSQ practises this roundabout on every Cheetham Hill lesson from lesson 15 onwards.
West Didsbury — Best for South Manchester (49-52%)
Routes you WILL encounter:
- Palatine Road southbound — busy A-road with bus stops, cyclists, and the critical junction with Barlow Moor Road. Lane positioning on the approach to the Barlow Moor Road junction is a common test fault.
- Wilmslow Road through Withington and Fallowfield — bus lanes, pedestrian crossings, and the chaotic Curry Mile section. Independent driving with sat-nav on this road tests your ability to follow directions while managing complex hazards.
- Burton Road / Cavendish Road residential area — quiet streets used for manoeuvres. Parallel parking between parked cars with limited space. The examiner uses these streets because they are close to the centre.
Tram warning: Metrolink crossings near Burton Road and East Didsbury are on several West Didsbury routes. Failing to stop at a tram crossing signal is an automatic serious fault. Watch for the flashing amber lights and diamond-shaped tram signals.
Sale — The A56 Challenge (46-49%)
- A56 Washway Road — fast-moving dual carriageway with frequent lane changes. Speed limit is 40mph but traffic often flows faster. Maintaining position, checking mirrors before every lane change, and planning exits early are essential.
- Sale town centre one-way system — short distances between turns mean you must read signs and get into the correct lane quickly. Hesitation in the wrong lane leads to either a missed turn (minor) or an unsafe lane change (serious).
- Brooklands residential — speed humps, 20mph zones, school crossings. The examiner watches your speed management — too fast over humps or through school zones is a common fault.
Stockport — The Hill Test (44-47%)
- Dialstone Lane — the test centre road is itself a significant hill. Many tests begin with a hill start right outside the centre. If you stall here, you are already on the back foot mentally.
- A6 Wellington Road — fast dual carriageway with complex roundabout approaches. Speed management between 30 and 40 zones requires constant sign-reading.
- Great Moor residential — narrow streets with cars on both sides. Priority situations and meeting traffic in confined spaces. Your spatial awareness is tested here.
Hyde — The Varied Test (43-46%)
- A57 Manchester Road — busy with HGVs. Following distance is tested by the examiner — stay at least 2 seconds behind.
- Mottram Road — transitions from 30 to national speed limit. Some learners fail to reach appropriate speed on the NSL section (too slow = holding up traffic = minor fault).
- M67 junction roundabout — motorway traffic merging with local traffic. Complex lane markings and fast-moving vehicles. Practice this 10+ times before your test.
Bredbury — The Friendliest Centre (50-53%)
- George Lane — the centre road is relatively quiet. Speed transitions between 30 and 40 zones.
- A560 roundabout — the main challenge. Multi-lane with fast traffic. Lane selection is critical.
- Romiley residential hills — moderate hills with parked cars. Hill starts on these roads are common.
DriveSQ recommendation: If you live in the Stockport area and want the best statistical chance, consider Bredbury over Stockport centre. The routes are less demanding and the pass rate is 6-8% higher.

Urmston Local Area Guide
Lessons around Urmston use real local roads including Higher Road, Stretford Road and Crofts Bank Road, so by the time you're ready for your test you've already driven the streets you'll use every day after passing. Urmston's council once booked The Beatles to play the Urmston Show at Abbotsfield Park on 5 August 1963, at the height of Beatlemania.
We also plan around school-run traffic near St Antony's Roman Catholic School and Urmston Grammar, using quieter spots like Abbotsfield Park (Chassen Park) for early manoeuvre practice before stepping up to busier sections of Higher Road.
Test centre: most learners around Urmston test at Sale (Manchester) Driving Test Centre, 36-38 Poplar Grove, Sale, M33 7ER; mock tests are planned around the routes examiners actually use from there.
“The local knowledge made the difference. Knowing Higher Road inside out meant test day nerves were about everything except the route.” – Josh, Urmston
