Disabilities We Accommodate

We believe everyone has the right to learn to drive. Whatever your condition, our instructors are trained to support you with patience, understanding, and the right teaching approach.

Physical Disabilities

Whether you have limited mobility, limb differences, or use a wheelchair, we can arrange adapted vehicles and tailor our instruction to work with your physical abilities. Many of our learners with physical conditions pass first time.

Visual Impairments

If you meet the DVLA eyesight requirements, you can absolutely learn to drive. We provide clear verbal instructions and work at your pace to build your confidence behind the wheel safely.

Hearing Impairments

Deaf and hard-of-hearing learners are welcome. Our instructors use visual signals, written instructions, and adapt their communication methods to ensure every lesson is clear and effective.

Learning Disabilities

Dyslexia, ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, and other learning differences are fully supported. We break lessons into manageable steps, use visual aids, and adapt our teaching methods to how you learn best.

Medical Conditions

Epilepsy, diabetes, heart conditions, and other medical conditions do not automatically prevent you from driving. We understand the DVLA requirements and can help you navigate the process with confidence.

Mental Health Conditions

Anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges can make learning to drive feel daunting. Our calm, patient instructors create a judgement-free environment where you can learn at your own pace.

Vehicle Adaptations Available

Modern vehicle adaptations mean that almost anyone can learn to drive. Here are some of the most common modifications we can arrange for your lessons.

Hand Controls

Push-pull or twist-grip hand controls for acceleration and braking, ideal for learners with limited leg function or lower limb conditions.

Steering Aids

Steering wheel knobs, balls, or tri-pin devices that allow single-handed steering for those with upper limb limitations or reduced grip strength.

Left-Foot Accelerator

A transferable accelerator pedal on the left side of the brake for learners who cannot use their right foot.

Pedal Modifications

Pedal extensions, guards, and raised pedals to accommodate different physical needs and ensure comfortable reach.

Secondary Controls

Adapted indicator switches, horn buttons, light controls, and other secondary controls positioned within easy reach.

Motability Scheme & Driving

The Motability scheme is a lifeline for many disabled people, providing access to a car, powered wheelchair, or scooter through your mobility allowance. Understanding how it works alongside learning to drive is important.

While the Motability scheme does not directly fund driving lessons, it can play a vital role in your journey to independence on the road. Here is what you need to know:

Key Motability Facts

  • You can lease a new car every three years using your Higher Rate Mobility Component of PIP or War Pensioners Mobility Supplement
  • Motability offers grants for vehicle adaptations such as hand controls, steering aids, and wheelchair storage
  • Insurance, servicing, breakdown cover, and tyre replacement are all included in your lease
  • You do not need a driving licence to join the scheme as a passenger, but you will need one to drive
  • A named driver can be added to your Motability car while you learn
  • DriveSQ can help you practise in your own Motability car once you have the right adaptations fitted
  • Visit motability.co.uk for full details and eligibility

DVSA Medical Requirements

Before learning to drive, you must inform the DVLA about any medical conditions or disabilities. Here is a straightforward guide to help you understand the process.

Declare Your Condition

When applying for your provisional licence, you must declare any medical condition or disability that could affect your driving. This is done on the D1 application form or online at gov.uk. Failing to declare can invalidate your licence and insurance.

DVLA Assessment

The DVLA will review your condition and may request a medical report from your doctor. In some cases, they may arrange an independent medical assessment. This is nothing to worry about - it is simply to ensure your safety and that of other road users.

Licence Decision

The DVLA will issue your licence (possibly with restrictions or conditions), request more information, or in rare cases, decline. Most conditions do not prevent driving. Your licence may be issued for a shorter period with periodic reviews.

Eyesight Requirements

You must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres. If you wear glasses or contact lenses to do this, you must wear them every time you drive. This is a legal requirement tested at the start of your practical driving test.

Driving Assessment

In some cases, you may be asked to attend a driving assessment at a mobility centre. These centres assess your ability to drive and recommend any vehicle adaptations you may need. DriveSQ can help you prepare for this.

Why Automatic May Be Right for You

For many disabled learners, choosing an automatic car can make the learning process significantly easier and more comfortable. Without the need to operate a clutch pedal and change gears manually, you can focus entirely on steering, observations, and road safety.

At DriveSQ, we charge the same price for both manual and automatic lessons, so you can choose whichever option works best for you without paying a premium.

  • No clutch pedal reduces physical demand and fatigue
  • Easier for learners with limited mobility or upper limb conditions
  • Allows full concentration on road awareness and hazard perception
  • Often fewer lessons needed to reach test standard
  • Less stressful for learners with anxiety or sensory conditions
  • Modern automatic cars are fuel-efficient and widely available
  • Same price as manual at DriveSQ - just £33/hr

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about disabled driving lessons in Manchester? Here are the answers to the most common queries we receive.

Yes, absolutely. Many people with physical disabilities successfully learn to drive and pass their test. At DriveSQ, we provide patient, understanding instruction and can arrange access to adapted vehicles with modifications such as hand controls, steering aids, left-foot accelerators, and more. We start with a free assessment to understand your individual needs and create a tailored learning plan that works for you.

Yes, you must inform the DVLA about any medical condition or disability that could affect your driving when you apply for your provisional licence. Some conditions require a medical assessment before your licence can be issued. The DVLA will then decide whether you can hold a licence and if any restrictions apply. Most conditions do not prevent you from driving. DriveSQ can guide you through this entire process step by step.

A wide range of adaptations are available to suit different needs. Common modifications include hand controls for acceleration and braking, steering wheel knobs or balls for single-handed steering, left-foot accelerators, pedal extensions or guards, swivel seats, and adapted secondary controls for indicators and lights. The specific adaptations you need will be identified during your initial assessment with DriveSQ, and we can help arrange them for your lessons.

The Motability scheme primarily helps you lease a car, powered wheelchair, or scooter using your mobility allowance. While driving lessons themselves are not directly funded by the scheme, Motability does offer grants for vehicle adaptations such as hand controls and steering aids. Once your Motability car has the right adaptations fitted, DriveSQ can help you practise in your own vehicle. Our lessons are very competitively priced at just £33/hr for both manual and automatic.

Many disabled learners find automatic transmission easier and more comfortable because it removes the need for clutch control, which can be physically challenging with certain conditions. Without a clutch pedal, you can focus more on steering, observation, and road positioning. At DriveSQ, both manual and automatic lessons are the same price at just £33/hr, so you can choose whichever option suits you best without any extra cost. We will help you decide during your initial assessment.

DriveSQ instructors are specially trained in patience and adaptive teaching methods. For learners with learning disabilities, anxiety, or other mental health conditions, we adjust the lesson pace, break complex manoeuvres into smaller steps, use clear and simple language, and create a calm, supportive atmosphere. We also offer instruction in Urdu and Punjabi for learners who are more comfortable in those languages. Every single learner receives a personalised approach designed around their needs. We also provide a free student learning app to help you study theory at your own pace.
