How to Book Your Theory Test in Manchester

Booking your theory test is straightforward when you know the steps. Here is a complete walkthrough of the process from start to finish.

Step 1

Get Your Provisional Licence

Before you can book a theory test, you need a valid provisional driving licence. You can apply online at gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence. It costs £34 and usually arrives within two weeks. You must be at least 17 years old to apply for a car provisional licence.

Step 2

Visit the DVSA Booking Website

Head to gov.uk/book-theory-test and select "car" as the vehicle type. You will need your provisional licence number, a valid email address, and a debit or credit card. The theory test fee is currently £23. Avoid third-party booking sites that charge extra fees on top of the DVSA price.

Step 3

Choose Your Manchester Test Centre

Enter your postcode and the system will show available centres near you. The main Manchester centres include Cheetham Hill on Bury Old Road and Sale in the Altrincham area. You will also find centres in Bolton, Bury, Stockport, and Oldham if those are more convenient for your location.

Step 4

Pick a Date and Time

Select a date and time that works for you. Morning slots tend to book up fastest, so if you have flexibility, afternoon appointments are often easier to secure. Try to leave yourself at least two to four weeks of study time before your chosen date so you can prepare properly.

Step 5

Confirm and Prepare

Complete payment and you will receive a booking confirmation by email. Make a note of your test date, time, and centre address. Now the real work begins: start revising with the DriveSQ free app and dedicated study materials so you walk into the test centre feeling confident and ready.

Manchester Theory Test Centres

Greater Manchester has several DVSA-approved theory test centres. Here are the most popular locations for booking your theory test near you.

Cheetham Hill

Located on Bury Old Road, this is the main Manchester city centre theory test centre. Easily accessible by bus from most M1-M20 postcodes. One of the busiest centres in the region so book early to secure your preferred slot.

Sale (Altrincham)

A popular choice for learners in South Manchester, Trafford, and Stockport areas. Serves postcodes M21-M33, SK1-SK9, and WA14-WA15. Often has more availability than the Cheetham Hill centre during peak booking periods.

Bolton

Ideal for learners in the BL postcode area and North-West Manchester. The Bolton centre is well connected by public transport and typically has good appointment availability, especially for weekday afternoon slots.

Bury

Convenient for those in the BL and M25-M45 postcode areas. The Bury test centre is a quieter option compared to the central Manchester locations, making it a good pick if you want a calmer testing environment.

Stockport

Serves learners in the SK1-SK16 postcode range and surrounding areas. Stockport is a strong option for anyone in East or South-East Manchester who wants to avoid travelling into the city centre for their test.

Oldham

Best suited for learners in the OL postcode area and East Manchester. The Oldham centre serves Rochdale, Ashton-under-Lyne, and surrounding towns. Booking is available through the same DVSA online system.

What to Study for the Theory Test

The DVSA theory test covers a wide range of driving knowledge. Understanding the key topics and how they are weighted will help you focus your revision and avoid wasting time on low-priority areas.

Get Study Advice
Road Signs & Markings

Learn every warning sign, regulatory sign, and information sign. Understand road markings, lane discipline, and what different coloured lines mean. This topic makes up a significant portion of the multiple-choice questions.

Road Safety & Awareness

Questions on vulnerable road users, stopping distances, speed limits in different zones, and how to respond to emergency vehicles. This section tests your ability to anticipate and react to hazards safely.

Vehicle Handling & Maintenance

Know your tyre pressures, how to check oil and coolant levels, what dashboard warning lights mean, and how to handle the vehicle in adverse weather conditions such as fog, ice, and heavy rain.

Environment & Eco-Driving

Questions on reducing emissions, fuel-efficient driving techniques, vehicle disposal, and the environmental impact of motoring. This is a newer section but appears regularly in modern theory tests.

Hazard Perception Tips & Advice

The hazard perception test catches many learners off guard. These practical tips will help you understand how the scoring works and how to maximise your marks.

Understand Developing Hazards

A developing hazard is something that would cause you to change speed, direction, or stop. Not every potential danger is a developing hazard. Look for situations that are actively getting worse, like a pedestrian stepping toward the road or a car pulling out from a junction.

Click Early, Not Late

The scoring window opens as soon as the hazard starts developing. Clicking early within this window scores you the maximum five points. Clicking late gives fewer points. Practice timing your responses so you react as soon as you spot the hazard forming, not when it has fully materialised.

Avoid Pattern Clicking

The DVSA system detects if you click in a regular pattern or click excessively throughout a clip. If the system detects a cheat pattern, you will score zero for that clip. Click only when you genuinely see a developing hazard and keep your responses natural and deliberate.

Watch for the Double Hazard Clip

One of the 14 clips contains two developing hazards instead of one. You need to spot and respond to both hazards in this clip. There is no way to know which clip it is beforehand, so stay alert throughout every single video from start to finish.

Practice With Real Clips

The DriveSQ free student app includes hazard perception practice clips that mirror the style and difficulty of the actual test. Practice regularly so your eyes learn to scan the road and identify hazards instinctively before they fully develop.

Scan the Whole Scene

Do not fixate on just the centre of the screen. Hazards can appear from pavements, side roads, driveways, and even behind parked vehicles. Develop a scanning technique that covers the full width and depth of each clip just as you would scan the road when driving.

  • No phones, books, or notes allowed in the test room
  • If you have a paper licence, bring your passport too

Last-Minute Revision Tips

The night before and morning of your theory test are critical. Use these practical tips to make the most of your final hours of preparation and walk in feeling confident.

  • Take a full mock test the evening before to gauge readiness
  • Focus on your weakest categories rather than re-reading everything
  • Get a good night of sleep instead of cramming until midnight
  • Eat a proper meal before the test to keep your focus sharp
  • Review road signs and stopping distances one final time
