Make 'learn to drive' the resolution you actually keep. Start fresh in January with DriveSQ Manchester.
Learning to drive consistently ranks among the most common—and most frequently abandoned—New Year resolutions. The good news is that, unlike many resolutions, passing your driving test is a concrete, achievable goal with a clear path: consistent lessons, structured practice, and a committed instructor. DriveSQ's new year programme is designed to help you actually follow through.
January often brings renewed motivation and, for many people, a quieter social calendar after the December rush, creating natural space for new commitments like weekly driving lessons. The DVSA test booking system also tends to have more immediate availability in January compared to the pre-summer rush, meaning your timeline from first lesson to test day can move faster than at busier times of year.
Rather than a vague resolution to "learn to drive sometime this year," DriveSQ helps new students set a concrete, achievable target—for example, "pass my test by Easter" or "be test-ready within 4 months." We discuss your weekly availability, budget, and target timeline during your first lesson, then build a structured plan to hit that goal, with regular progress check-ins to keep you accountable.
Many resolutions fail not from lack of initial motivation but from losing momentum after a few weeks. DriveSQ combats this with consistent weekly scheduling (rather than ad-hoc booking that is easy to deprioritise), visible progress tracking via our student portal, and an instructor who keeps you accountable to your stated goals—turning a vague intention into a structured, supported journey.
If you started lessons previously with another school or instructor and lost momentum, January is an excellent time for a genuine restart. DriveSQ's first-lesson skills assessment means we build your programme from your actual current ability, whether that is complete beginner or someone who stalled partway through a previous course.
Every DriveSQ student gets free access to our Student Portal with 700+ DVSA theory questions, 14 mock tests, hazard perception training, and progress tracking.

Lessons around Tameside use real local roads including Market Street (Droylsden), Manchester Road and Wellington Road (Ashton-under-Lyne), so by the time you're ready for your test you've already driven the streets you'll use every day after passing. The Stalybridge Buffet Bar on platform 4 of Stalybridge station has had a licensed bar since at least 1860, with a court record from 1870 of a patron being jailed for drunkenness there — it is one of very few licensed station buffets in England to survive largely intact from before the Second World War.
We also plan around school-run traffic near Samuel Laycock School (Ashton-under-Lyne) and Droylsden Academy, using quieter spots like Daisy Nook Country Park (Medlock Valley) for early manoeuvre practice before stepping up to busier sections of Market Street (Droylsden).
Test centre: most learners around Tameside test at Bredbury (Manchester) Driving Test Centre, Lingard Lane, Bredbury, Stockport, SK6 2QT; mock tests are planned around the routes examiners actually use from there.
“My instructor knew exactly which junctions near Samuel Laycock School (Ashton-under-Lyne) get busy at school-run time and planned around them.” – Sam, Tameside
