What Pass Plus Covers

Pass Plus is a DVSA-designed course consisting of six practical modules. Each module builds your skills in a different driving environment, giving you the experience and confidence that the standard driving test simply cannot cover.

Town Driving
Navigate busy Manchester city centre traffic with confidence. Learn advanced techniques for handling complex junctions, multi-lane roundabouts, bus lanes, tram crossings, and the unpredictable stop-start flow of urban driving. We cover areas like Deansgate, Oxford Road, and the Northern Quarter where traffic density is highest and hazard perception is critical. You will practise safe positioning, effective mirror use at speed, and how to anticipate the behaviour of cyclists, pedestrians, and delivery vehicles in tight urban spaces.
All-Weather Driving
Manchester weather is famously unpredictable, which makes this module especially relevant. Learn how to drive safely in heavy rain, fog, high winds, and low winter sun. You will understand how wet roads affect braking distances, why aquaplaning happens and how to react, and how to adjust your speed and following distance when visibility drops. We also cover proper use of fog lights, demisters, and how to manage glare from wet road surfaces at night.
Night Driving
Driving after dark presents unique challenges that many newly qualified drivers find daunting. This module covers correct use of dipped and full-beam headlights, how to avoid dazzling other drivers, judging speed and distance in reduced visibility, and spotting pedestrians wearing dark clothing. We schedule evening sessions through areas like Fallowfield, Didsbury, and the A6 corridor so you experience real night driving conditions on roads you are likely to use regularly.
Dual Carriageways
Dual carriageways are faster and busier than the roads you drove on during your test. This module teaches you how to join and leave dual carriageways safely, maintain appropriate lane discipline, overtake slower vehicles confidently, and read overhead gantry signs. We use routes along the A56 Chester Road, A57 Hyde Road, and Princess Parkway — all common Manchester dual carriageways where traffic moves at 50–70 mph and lane changes require decisive action.
Motorway Driving
Since 2018, learner drivers have been allowed on motorways with an instructor, but many still pass their test without any motorway experience. This module takes you onto the M60, M62, and M56 — three of the busiest motorways in the North West. You will learn how to use slip roads to merge safely at speed, maintain a two-second gap in heavy traffic, use smart motorway variable speed limits, and handle the stress of multi-lane driving at 70 mph. We also cover breakdowns and what to do on a hard shoulder or in an emergency refuge area.
Rural Roads
Country roads account for a disproportionate number of fatal accidents among young drivers. This module takes you out of the city to roads around Glossop, Lymm, and the Cheshire countryside. You will learn how to handle narrow lanes with limited visibility, sharp bends, uneven surfaces, and unexpected hazards like tractors, horses, and cyclists. We practise reading the road ahead, adjusting speed for blind corners, and safe overtaking on single-carriageway roads where oncoming traffic is a constant factor.
Advantages

Why Take Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is not just another driving course — it is a genuine investment in your safety and your wallet. Here is why hundreds of Manchester drivers choose to complete it every year.

Insurance Discounts of 25–30%
Many major UK insurers recognise Pass Plus and offer discounts ranging from 10% to 30% on your first-year premium. For a newly qualified driver paying £1,500 or more per year, that can mean savings of £375–£450 — far more than the cost of the course. Insurers who participate include Admiral, Direct Line, Aviva, and many others. You receive a DVSA certificate as proof of completion, which you can present when getting quotes online or over the phone.
Genuine Confidence Building
The standard driving test takes place on relatively quiet roads during the day. It does not include motorways, and it rarely involves heavy rain or darkness. Pass Plus fills those gaps systematically. After completing the course, you will feel genuinely prepared for the situations that catch new drivers off guard — joining the M60 at rush hour, driving home from work in December darkness, or navigating a narrow country lane in the Peak District.
Fills Gaps in the Standard Test
The practical driving test is designed to confirm you meet the minimum safe standard. It does not — and cannot — test you in every scenario you will face as a driver. Pass Plus was created by the DVSA specifically to address this. Each of the six modules targets a driving situation that is either not included in the test or is only briefly touched upon. The result is a more complete, more capable driver.
Reduce Your Accident Risk
New drivers are statistically the most at-risk group on UK roads. One in five newly qualified drivers has an accident within their first year. Pass Plus directly addresses the most common causes — inexperience with motorways, poor hazard perception at night, and overconfidence on rural roads. By gaining structured experience in these areas with a qualified instructor beside you, you significantly reduce your likelihood of being involved in a serious incident.
Who It’s For

Is Pass Plus Right for You?

Pass Plus is suitable for any full UK licence holder, but it is especially valuable for these groups of drivers.

Newly Passed Drivers
If you have just passed your test in the last few months, Pass Plus is the natural next step. It builds on your existing skills while the test preparation is still fresh, and the insurance savings are highest when you are a brand-new driver. Most of our Pass Plus students book within 4–8 weeks of passing their practical test.
Nervous Drivers Wanting More Experience
Some drivers pass their test but still feel anxious about certain situations — motorways, night driving, or busy city traffic. Pass Plus gives you structured, supervised practice in exactly these environments. There is no pressure and no test. Your instructor works at your pace, building your confidence gradually until you feel comfortable handling any road situation independently.
Anyone Wanting Insurance Savings
Even if you have been driving for a year or two, Pass Plus can help reduce your insurance premiums. Many insurers offer the discount regardless of how long ago you passed, as long as you hold a valid Pass Plus certificate. If your current premium is high, the course could pay for itself within a few months of the renewal.
Did You Know?

1 in 5 newly qualified drivers has an accident within their first year. Pass Plus is specifically designed to reduce this statistic by giving you real experience in the situations where new drivers are most vulnerable.

Insurance Savings Example

A 19-year-old driver in Manchester paying £1,800/year could save £450–£540 with a 25–30% Pass Plus discount. The course costs £198 — meaning you save £252–£342 in the first year alone, and continue saving every year until you build up a no-claims bonus.

No Time Limit

There is no deadline for taking Pass Plus. Whether you passed your test last week or five years ago, you are eligible. However, the earlier you take it, the sooner you benefit from insurance discounts and improved driving confidence.

The Process

How Pass Plus Works at DriveSQ

Booking and Scheduling

Getting started with Pass Plus at DriveSQ is straightforward. Simply message us on WhatsApp or call 07352 932003, and we will arrange your sessions around your schedule. The course consists of a minimum of 6 hours of practical driving, which can be split across two or three sessions depending on your preference. Many students choose to complete it in two 3-hour blocks, while others prefer three 2-hour sessions spread across different days to cover daytime and evening driving conditions.

What You Will Drive

Our Manchester Pass Plus routes have been carefully planned to give you the best possible experience across all six modules. For the motorway module, we use the M60 orbital, M62 (eastbound towards Huddersfield and westbound towards Liverpool), and the M56 heading towards Manchester Airport. These are among the busiest motorways in the North West, so you get genuine experience of heavy traffic, smart motorway systems, and multi-lane merging.

For dual carriageways, we cover Princess Parkway (A5103), the Mancunian Way, the A56 Chester Road, and the A57 Hyde Road. Rural roads take you out towards Glossop via the A57 Snake Pass approach, through Lymm and Knutsford, and into the Cheshire countryside where narrow lanes and sharp bends are common.

Pricing — Simple and Transparent

Pass Plus at DriveSQ costs £33 per hour. The standard 6-hour course is £198 total. No hidden fees, no booking charges. If you need extra time on any module, additional hours are available at the same rate.

Night Driving Sessions

For the night driving module, we schedule an evening session — typically starting around 7pm in autumn and winter, or 9pm in summer when darkness falls later. You will drive through well-lit urban areas like Fallowfield and Didsbury, then onto less well-lit suburban roads and dual carriageways where proper headlight use and hazard awareness become critical. Manchester’s mix of well-maintained trunk roads and older residential streets provides an excellent training environment for night driving.

Assessment — No Test

There is no formal examination at the end of Pass Plus. Your DriveSQ instructor continuously assesses your competence throughout each module using the DVSA’s grading system. As long as you reach the “achieved” standard in all six modules, you will receive your official DVSA Pass Plus certificate. If any module needs more work, we simply add extra time — there is no penalty, no failure, and no pressure.

Your Certificate

Upon completion, you receive an official DVSA Pass Plus certificate. This is a nationally recognised document that you can present to any participating insurer to claim your discount. We also register your completion on the DVSA system so insurers can verify it electronically.

What Our Pass Plus Students Say

Real reviews from drivers who completed Pass Plus with DriveSQ in Manchester.

Tom R.
Stockport SK3
“I passed my test last March but was absolutely terrified of motorways. Kept avoiding the M60 and taking ridiculous back-road detours everywhere. Did my Pass Plus with DriveSQ and within two sessions I was merging onto the M62 like I’d been doing it for years. The instructor was patient, explained everything clearly, and never made me feel rushed. My insurance also dropped by £320 at renewal which more than paid for the course. Genuinely wish I had done it sooner.”

Amina H.
Rusholme M14
“I passed my test in summer and hadn’t driven at night at all. The thought of driving home from uni in the dark in December was stressing me out. My Pass Plus sessions covered night driving through Fallowfield and Didsbury, then onto the A6 and some country roads near Stockport. The difference in my confidence was massive. I also got a 25% discount on my insurance with Admiral which saved me about £280. Highly recommend DriveSQ — professional, friendly, and really good at explaining things.”

Daniel W.
Stretford M32
“Booked the 10-hour extended Pass Plus package because I wanted extra time on motorways and dual carriageways. We covered the M60, M56 towards the airport, and some fast A-roads I use for work. The rural roads session out near Glossop was brilliant too — completely different driving to anything in Manchester. No test at the end, just a certificate, which took the pressure off completely. Great value at £33/hr.”

Pass Plus is a DVSA-registered training scheme designed for drivers who have recently passed their practical driving test. It consists of a minimum of 6 hours of practical training covering 6 modules: town driving, all-weather driving, driving at night, driving on dual carriageways, driving on motorways, and driving on rural roads. There is no test at the end — your instructor assesses your competence throughout the course. Upon successful completion of all six modules, you receive an official DVSA Pass Plus certificate which can be used to claim insurance discounts from participating insurers.

Pass Plus at DriveSQ costs £33 per hour. The standard 6-hour course is £198 in total. We also offer an extended 10-hour package at £330 which includes additional practice time on motorways and complex junctions for drivers who want extra confidence. There are no hidden fees or booking charges — you pay only for the hours you drive.

Many insurance companies offer discounts of between 10% and 30% to drivers who have completed the Pass Plus course. The exact discount varies by insurer, but over the first few years of driving the savings can significantly outweigh the cost of the course. Insurers such as Admiral, Direct Line, Aviva, and many others participate in the scheme. You receive a DVSA Pass Plus certificate which you can show to insurers when getting quotes. For a young driver in Manchester paying £1,500–£2,000 per year, this could mean savings of £300–£600 annually.

No, there is no time limit on when you can take Pass Plus after passing your test. While it is most commonly taken within the first year of passing, any full licence holder can enrol. It is particularly popular with drivers who passed their test some time ago but feel they need more experience in areas like motorway driving or night driving. Whether you passed last month or five years ago, you are eligible and welcome to book.

At DriveSQ, our Manchester Pass Plus routes cover the M60 orbital motorway, M62 eastbound and westbound, M56 towards the airport, and sections of the A56, A57, and A6. We also use dual carriageways like the Mancunian Way and Princess Parkway. For rural roads, we drive out towards Glossop, Lymm, and the Cheshire countryside. Night driving sessions cover Fallowfield, Didsbury, the A6 corridor, and suburban roads with varied lighting conditions. Every route has been selected to give you the most useful, real-world experience possible.

No, there is no formal test at the end of Pass Plus. Your instructor continuously assesses your driving throughout the 6 modules using the DVSA’s grading criteria. As long as you reach the required standard in each module, you will receive your DVSA Pass Plus certificate. If you need extra time on any module, additional hours can be arranged at the same hourly rate of £33. There is no penalty for needing more practice — the goal is for you to feel confident and competent, not to pass an exam under pressure.
