Documents You Need for Driving Lessons & Your Test

Having the right documents at the right time prevents costly cancellations and delays. Here is a complete guide for Manchester learners on exactly what you need at each stage of your driving journey.

Stage 1: Starting Driving Lessons

To begin professional driving lessons, you need just one document:

  • UK provisional driving licence (photocard) — This proves your identity and your legal right to learn on public roads. Without it, no lesson can take place.

You do not need your theory test certificate to start practical lessons. Many learners begin lessons and theory revision simultaneously.

Stage 2: Booking Your Practical Test

To book your practical driving test on the DVSA website, you need:

  • Provisional licence number — The number on your photocard
  • Theory test pass certificate number — Confirms you have passed theory within the last 2 years
  • Payment — £62 for weekday tests, £75 for weekend/evening tests

Stage 3: Test Day

On your actual driving test day, bring:

  • UK photocard provisional licence — Mandatory. No licence = cancelled test and lost fee
  • Glasses or contact lenses — If you normally wear them for driving

Your DriveSQ instructor will meet you before the test, take you for a warm-up drive, and ensure you have everything before entering the test centre.

Do NOT Forget Your Licence

If you arrive at your driving test without your provisional licence, the test is cancelled immediately and you lose the £62/£75 fee. Check the night before.

Test Day Checklist

✓ Provisional licence (photocard)
✓ Glasses/contacts if needed
✓ Theory pass number (for reference)
✓ Arrive 10 mins early
✓ Warm-up drive with instructor

Theory Pass Validity

Your theory test pass is valid for 2 years. If it expires before you pass your practical test, you must retake and pass the theory again.

Your Questions Answered

You need a valid UK provisional driving licence (photocard). That is the only document required to begin lessons. You do not need your theory test certificate to start practical lessons — only to book your practical driving test. DriveSQ will check your provisional licence before your first lesson to confirm it is valid.

You must bring your UK photocard driving licence (provisional). If you have an old-style paper licence, you also need a valid passport. You must also have your theory test pass certificate number (your instructor or DVSA usually has this on record). Arriving without valid ID means your test will be cancelled and you lose the fee.

Apply online at gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence. You need: your National Insurance number, a valid passport or identity details, addresses for the last 3 years, and £34 (online) or £43 (post). A digital photo is taken from your passport. Processing takes 1–3 weeks. You can apply up to 3 months before turning 17.

Your driving test will be cancelled, and you will lose the test fee (£62 weekday / £75 weekend). There is no flexibility on this — the examiner cannot proceed without verifying your identity. DriveSQ instructors always remind learners to bring their licence, and we recommend checking the night before.

If you need glasses or contact lenses to read a number plate at 20 metres, you must wear them for your entire test and whenever you drive. The examiner will ask you to read a number plate before the test begins. If you cannot read it (with or without corrective lenses), the test is failed immediately.

When you pass your theory test, you receive a pass certificate with a unique number. You need this certificate number to book your practical driving test. The theory pass is valid for 2 years — if it expires before you pass your practical test, you must retake and pass the theory again. DriveSQ recommends passing your theory by your 20th lesson.
