Stage 1 — Familiarisation: Sitting in the car, adjusting your seat, learning what each control does. No driving. No engine. No pressure.
Stage 2 — Stationary engine: Starting the car, finding the bite point, gentle steering with the car barely moving. Empty car park only.
Stage 3 — Quiet roads: Residential streets with almost no traffic. Left turns only at first — they are simpler than right turns.
Stage 4 — Progressive exposure: Slightly busier roads, right turns, simple T-junctions. Each step up happens only when YOU say you are ready.
When anxiety spikes during a lesson, your DriveSQ instructor guides you through tactical breathing: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 6. This activates your parasympathetic nervous system, physically reducing heart rate and muscle tension within 30 seconds. We practise this technique at traffic lights, in queuing traffic, and before roundabout approaches until it becomes your automatic stress response.
Fear of making errors drives most driving anxiety. DriveSQ deliberately creates safe environments for mistakes to happen. Stalling at a junction on a quiet road teaches you that stalling is recoverable — and each recovery reduces the fear.
