Ancoats sits at the north-eastern edge of Manchester city centre, bordered by Great Ancoats Street to the west, Oldham Road (A62) to the north, and the Ashton Canal to the east. This location means you encounter some of the busiest junctions in the city during every lesson, including the major signals at the junction of Great Ancoats Street and Oldham Road, and the multi-lane approach to the inner ring road at Pin Mill Brow.
Great Ancoats Street (A665) is one of the most important roads you will learn. It carries heavy traffic in both directions and features multiple traffic-light junctions, dedicated cycle lanes, and bus gates that can catch out unprepared drivers. Pollard Street connects Ancoats to the Etihad Campus and Beswick, requiring confident lane positioning through staggered crossroads. Every Junction Road and Bengal Street provide practice with narrow residential streets and parked-car hazards.
Lessons starting in Ancoats naturally extend into the Northern Quarter via Oldham Street, Stevenson Square, and Lever Street. These streets teach you to deal with high pedestrian footfall, delivery vehicles blocking lanes, and taxi traffic.
