Greater Manchester's road network covers over 4,500 miles of road managed across ten metropolitan boroughs. Both questions together count as one driving fault if answered incorrectly — the penalty is the same whether you answer one or both questions incorrectly. The questions are not memorised by rote but by understanding the function being tested — knowing that checking oil involves the dipstick on a warm engine is more useful than memorising a scripted answer.

Road Markings Guide

• Yellow line markings indicate parking restrictions — single yellow lines prohibit parking during the hours shown on the nearby sign; double yellow lines prohibit parking at any time; yellow kerb dashes restrict loading.
• Stop lines at junctions (a solid white line across the full width of your lane) require the vehicle to stop — even if the road appears clear. Moving off before a full stop constitutes a serious fault on test and creates genuine collision risk.
• Arrows on the road surface indicate the direction of travel required from that lane — learners must respond to road arrows as they respond to road signs, since both carry the same legal weight.
• Speed humps, raised tables and chicanes are traffic calming measures that require a vehicle to reduce speed — driving over a speed hump at more than 15mph risks undercarriage damage and constitutes hazardous driving in a residential zone.

DVSA Practical Test — What You Need to Know

Test cancellation by the candidate requires at least three clear working days' notice to avoid forfeiture of the £62 test fee. If the DVSA cancels a test due to examiner sickness or other operational reasons, a full refund is offered. The waiting time for a test appointment varies significantly by test centre — Manchester centres typically have 4-10 week waits in normal periods, but backlogs following industrial action or pandemic disruptions can extend this to 16+ weeks.
