Here, the Metrolink tram line runs along Moss Lane East, and vehicles crossing from Claremont Road must give way to trams approaching from both directions simultaneously.
The tram approaches at up to 30 mph, and no audible warning is given until the bell sounds at the crossing point itself. Learners who misjudge approach speed are at serious risk: by the time the bell sounds, a tram can be less than two seconds away. Standard gap-acceptance instincts calibrated for road vehicles do not apply here — trams cannot brake quickly or steer to avoid.
What we teach: We train learners to identify the overhead wire gantries as a pre-approach cue, scan the full Moss Lane East corridor in both directions before committing to the crossing, and pause at the give-way line until they can confirm both tram paths are clear. This procedure is built into every lesson that uses Claremont Road — not covered once and moved on from.

Dedicated cycle lanes run alongside the tram corridor on sections of Moss Lane East. Learners must simultaneously monitor the tram corridor and cycle lane, checking for cyclists approaching from behind when turning left across both.
Multiple schools generate heavy pedestrian activity during morning and afternoon periods. Speed limits are enforced, crossing patrols are active, and informal crossings are frequent. We plan lessons to include this corridor during active school hours so learners experience the real environment.
Several stretches of Great Western Street operate as one-way traffic. Signs must be read and obeyed; the instinct to follow general traffic flow can mislead learners unfamiliar with the area. We walk through every affected section in advance of driving it.
