How to Prepare for Your Driving Test — Expert Tips from DriveSQ
Your DVSA practical driving test doesn't have to be nerve-wracking. With the right preparation, you can walk in — or rather, drive in — feeling genuinely ready. Here's everything DriveSQ's DVSA-approved instructors recommend.
1. Know the Test Format Inside Out
- The test lasts approximately 38–40 minutes of actual driving
- Show me / tell me questions at the start (2 questions about vehicle safety)
- General driving on various road types
- Independent driving section (approximately 20 minutes)
- At least one reversing manoeuvre (parallel park, bay park, or reverse around a corner)
- Possible emergency stop
2. Complete at Least 2 Mock Tests
Mock tests are the single most effective preparation tool. They replicate the real test experience — the duration, the pressure, the examiner format — so nothing surprises you on the day. DriveSQ mock tests use real test routes from your specific test centre.
3. Practice the Show Me / Tell Me Questions
There are 19 possible show me / tell me questions. You'll be asked 2. Make sure you know all of them. Your DriveSQ instructor will go through these with you, and you can find the full list on the DVSA website.
4. Drive the Test Routes in Advance
DriveSQ instructors know the routes used at your test centre. In the weeks before your test, you'll drive these routes in your lessons — so on test day, the roads feel familiar.
5. Get a Good Night's Sleep Before Your Test
Fatigue significantly affects driving performance. Aim for 7–8 hours of sleep the night before your test and avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours beforehand.
6. Arrive Early
Arrive at the test centre at least 10 minutes before your test time. Bring your provisional licence (both parts if you have an old-style paper counterpart). Take a few deep breaths and trust your preparation.
7. Trust Your Training
If DriveSQ has entered you for your test, it's because your instructor genuinely believes you're ready. Trust that assessment. Focus on driving naturally — the way you do in your lessons — and the test will take care of itself.
