Why Parallel Parking Matters

Parallel parking is one of four possible test manoeuvres. The examiner picks one at random — you cannot choose. In Manchester, where narrow streets in Chorlton, Heaton Moor, and Didsbury are lined with parked cars, parallel parking is also a daily necessity after you pass.

Why Parallel Parking Matters

The Step-by-Step Method

Step 1: Pull alongside
Draw up parallel to the car you want to park behind, about one door's width away. Your mirrors should roughly align.

Step 2: Observation
Check all mirrors and blind spots. Look over your left shoulder. If it's clear, begin.

Step 3: Reverse and turn
Reverse slowly. When your back wheels align with the other car's rear bumper, turn the steering wheel one full turn to the left (towards the kerb).

Step 4: The 45-degree point
Continue reversing slowly. When your car is at roughly 45 degrees to the kerb (check the left mirror — you should see the kerb appearing), straighten the wheel.

Step 5: Final adjustment
Continue reversing straight back. When your nearside front wheel is about to cross the line of the kerb, turn the steering wheel one full turn to the right to bring the front in.

Step 6: Straighten up
Once parallel to the kerb, straighten the wheel. You should be within 30cm of the kerb and reasonably close to the car behind.

Common Mistakes

  • Going too fast: Slow is smooth, smooth is safe. Use clutch control (manual) or creep speed (auto).

  • Forgetting observations: The examiner marks every time you don't check mirrors and blind spots during the manoeuvre.

  • Ending too far from the kerb: More than two drain covers away? You need more left lock earlier.

  • Hitting the kerb: If you feel the back wheel touch, stop, pull forward slightly with right lock, then try again. This is allowed.
