Driving in the UK: What’s Different

Left-Hand Driving

The most fundamental difference is driving on the left side of the road. This affects everything from junction approaches to roundabout direction to overtaking. Our Polish-speaking instructor explains these changes in context, using Polish road system comparisons so the new rules click naturally rather than feeling arbitrary.

Speed Limits & Road Signs

UK speed limits use miles per hour rather than kilometres per hour. The default limits are 30mph in built-up areas, 60mph on single carriageways, and 70mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Many road signs also differ from Polish standards. We cover every sign and marking you will encounter, explained clearly in Polish.

Roundabouts & Junctions

UK roundabouts rotate clockwise (opposite to Polish convention). Priority rules, lane selection, and signalling requirements are covered methodically during your lessons. Manchester has hundreds of roundabouts from mini to multi-lane, so you get extensive practice with every type during your training.

Cultural Understanding: Our Polish-speaking instructors understand the specific challenges Polish drivers face when adapting to UK roads. This cultural awareness accelerates your learning and prevents common cross-system errors.
Key Differences
  • Drive on the left
  • Speed in mph, not km/h
  • Roundabouts go clockwise
  • Different road markings
  • Give way rules differ
  • Amber means stop (not go)
Licence Exchange

Polish EU licences are valid for driving in the UK. If you need to exchange to a UK licence, the DVLA process is straightforward and we can guide you through it in Polish.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, we have instructors who speak Polish and can conduct lessons in Polish. This means all instructions, explanations, and feedback are delivered in your native language, removing the language barrier that can slow progress with English-only instruction.

If you hold a full Polish (EU) driving licence, you can drive in the UK. However, if you need to exchange it or if you are a new learner, UK driving lessons and a UK test are required. We can guide you through the specific process that applies to your situation.

Yes, there are important differences. The UK drives on the left, roundabouts rotate clockwise, speed limits use mph instead of km/h, and some road markings and signs differ. Our Polish-speaking instructor explains these differences clearly in Polish to avoid any confusion.

Lessons are £35/hr, the same rate for everyone regardless of language. There is no surcharge for Polish-language instruction. Block bookings of 10 hours cost £330.

The DVSA theory test is available in several languages but not currently in Polish—you must take it in English or Welsh. However, our student portal has theory practice materials that help you prepare, and our instructors can explain concepts in Polish to support your study.

Edgeley & Shaw Heath Local Area Guide

Lessons around Edgeley and Shaw Heath use real local roads including Castle Street, Edgeley Road and Hardcastle Road, so by the time you're ready for your test you've already driven the streets you'll use every day after passing. Edgeley Park, home of Stockport County FC since 1902, sits right in the middle of the area and is a familiar landmark we use for giving directions on lessons.

We also plan around school-run traffic near Cheadle Heath Primary School and Stockport Academy, using quieter spots like Alexandra Park for early manoeuvre practice before stepping up to busier sections of Castle Street.

Test centre: most learners around Edgeley and Shaw Heath test at Sale Driving Test Centre (or Stockport pupils sometimes use Cheadle Hulme routes); mock tests are planned around the routes examiners actually use from there.

“Started as a complete beginner and finished test-ready, with proper practice on Castle Street and around Alexandra Park.” – Jack, Edgeley & Shaw Heath
