MSPSL stands for Mirrors, Signal, Position, Speed, Look — the five-step routine every driver must follow before any change of direction or speed. It is the backbone of the UK driving test, and examiners at centres like Cheetham Hill and Bredbury watch for it at every junction, roundabout, and lane change.

Check your interior mirror first for a general picture, then the relevant door mirror for the direction you are moving. On Manchester roads like Wilmslow Road or the A56, traffic approaches fast — a quick glance is not enough. Hold each mirror check for a genuine look.
Signal in good time before your manoeuvre — not too early (confusing) and not too late (dangerous). On busy Manchester roads like Deansgate or Princess Road, other drivers need time to react. If no one benefits from a signal, you can skip it — but when in doubt, signal.
Move into the correct lane or road position before you reach the junction. On multi-lane roads like Great Ancoats Street or the Mancunian Way, late lane changes are dangerous. For left turns, position left. For right turns, position right or use the right-hand lane. At roundabouts, follow road markings.
Adjust your speed to suit the hazard ahead. This often means slowing down and selecting the right gear before you arrive. On Manchester's 20mph zones (near schools in Didsbury, Chorlton, and Whalley Range) or 40mph dual carriageways (Hyde Road, Kingsway), matching speed to the limit is essential.
The final step: look properly before committing. At junctions on Stockport Road or Ashton Old Road, look right-left-right. At roundabouts, look for gaps. The examiner wants to see your head move — dashboard staring is a serious fault.

Every DriveSQ lesson reinforces MSPSL on real Manchester roads. Our instructors call out each step until it becomes automatic. From your first lesson in Didsbury to your mock test at Cheetham Hill, MSPSL is the thread that runs through everything.
