Why Night Driving Is Different

Between October and March, UK evenings get dark before 5pm. In Manchester, that means millions of journeys happen in darkness — including yours. Night driving is not part of the standard driving test, but it is a critical skill for safe driving after you pass. DriveSQ offers dedicated night-driving modules.

Why Night Driving Is Different

Visibility Challenges in Manchester

Manchester's street lighting is generally good on main roads (Wilmslow Road, Chester Road, Stockport Road), but residential streets in Didsbury, Chorlton, and Heaton Moor can be surprisingly dark. Rain — which Manchester gets 150 days a year — reflects headlights off wet tarmac and reduces visibility further.

Headlight Rules

  • Dipped headlights: Use whenever visibility is seriously reduced AND at night on all lit roads

  • Full beam: Use on unlit roads when no other vehicles are ahead or approaching. Switch to dipped if you could dazzle anyone

  • Fog lights: Only when visibility drops below 100 metres. Must be switched OFF when visibility improves — it is illegal to use them otherwise

  • Daytime running lights: Are NOT sufficient at night. Always check your full headlights are on

Night Driving Tips for Manchester

Reduce speed: You cannot see as far at night, so your stopping distance relative to what you can see is shorter. On unlit roads around Northenden, Reddish, or the outskirts, drop 5-10mph below the limit.

Watch for pedestrians: On Curry Mile, Deansgate, and other busy nightlife areas, pedestrians may step into the road unexpectedly. Dark clothing makes them nearly invisible.

Dazzle recovery: If an oncoming car has full beam, look toward the left kerb, not at the headlights. Your eyes will readjust in 3-5 seconds.

Keep your windscreen clean: A dirty windscreen scatters light from oncoming headlights, dramatically reducing visibility. Clean inside and outside regularly.
